BMI calculator — with South Asian thresholds
Calculate your body mass index in metric or imperial units. Toggle to South Asian thresholds, where increased risk begins at a BMI of 23 and obesity at 27.5 — because cardiometabolic risk rises at a lower BMI in South Asian populations.

Frequently asked questions
Why do South Asians use a lower BMI threshold?
South Asian populations develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at a lower BMI and younger age, with more visceral (abdominal) fat for the same weight. WHO and many guidelines therefore use lower cut-offs: increased risk from a BMI of about 23 and obesity at 27.5, rather than 25 and 30.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a useful screening tool but not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is stored, so very muscular people can be mislabelled. Waist circumference and blood tests (HbA1c, lipids, blood pressure) give a fuller picture of metabolic health.
What should I do if my BMI is in the increased-risk range?
Ask your GP for a metabolic screen — HbA1c, fasting glucose, a lipid panel and blood pressure — and discuss realistic lifestyle changes. Even 5–10% weight loss meaningfully lowers the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes, especially for South Asians.
Can Ginie Health advise on my metabolic health?
Yes. A written opinion from a PGIMER/AIIMS-trained specialist costs $45 CAD, delivered within 6 hours, with no referral needed — helpful if you want an expert view on your BMI, waist measurement and blood results.
