Ferritin checker — iron, thyroid & energy

Enter your ferritin (iron stores) to see what it means — including the important gap between what a lab calls “normal” and what is functionally optimal for thyroid function and energy.

Results are estimates based on the values you enter and standard formulas and reference ranges, which vary between laboratories and between individuals. “Normal” isn’t the same as “optimal”. Most lab reference ranges flag ferritin as normal above about 12–15 µg/L. But functional iron deficiency — where ferritin is technically in range yet too low for optimal thyroid-hormone conversion and energy — typically occurs below 50–70 µg/L. If your ferritin is 20 and your GP says it’s “normal,” that answer may be technically correct but clinically inadequate, especially with fatigue, hair loss, or a thyroid condition.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal ferritin level?
Many labs call ferritin “normal” above about 12–15 µg/L. But that lower end is often functionally insufficient — below 30 µg/L confirms iron deficiency, and many people feel best with ferritin in the 50–150 µg/L range, particularly with a thyroid condition.
Can low ferritin cause fatigue and hair loss even if I'm not anaemic?
Yes. Functional iron deficiency — low ferritin without frank anaemia — commonly causes fatigue, hair shedding and reduced exercise tolerance, and it impairs conversion of thyroid hormone. A ferritin of 20 can be labelled “normal” yet still be the cause of your symptoms.
Can Ginie Health review my ferritin and thyroid results?
Yes. A written opinion from a PGIMER/AIIMS-trained specialist costs $45 CAD, delivered within 6 hours, with no referral needed — useful for interpreting ferritin alongside your thyroid panel.
